Cleaner burning aviation fuels can reduce contrail cloudiness

چکیده

Abstract Contrail cirrus account for the major share of aviation’s climate impact. Yet, links between jet fuel composition, contrail microphysics and impact remain unresolved. Here we present unique observations from two DLR-NASA aircraft campaigns that measured exhaust characteristics an Airbus A320 burning either standard fuels or low aromatic sustainable aviation blends. Our results show soot particles can regulate number ice crystals current emission levels. We provide experimental evidence result in a 50 to 70% reduction concentrations increase crystal size. Reduced numbers cause less energy deposition atmosphere warming. Meaningful reductions could therefore be obtained widespread adoptation fuels, regulations lower maximum content.

Cleaner Cars and Fuels

Advances in vehicle design and fuel quality mean cars can be made cleaner and more efficient. Lower emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), particles (including the fine dust and soot PM10) and hydrocarbons (HCs) also known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will lead to better urban air quality and less summertime smog. Lower emissions of carbon dioxi...

Alternative Fuels In Aviation

During the last years, the aviation sector has been looking into alternatives to kerosene from crude oil, to combat climate change by reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to ensure security of supply at affordable prices. The efforts are also a reaction to commitments and policy packages. Currently, a wide range of possible fuel candidates and fuel blends are discussed in the triple ...

Development and Evaluation of Alternative Aviation Fuels

There continues to be significant interest in the development, certification, and use of alternative (non-petroleum) aviation fuels. The motivation for this is driven by many factors, including the growing demand and reduced supply of petroleum-derived fuels, cost volatility, and desire for a reliable domestic fuel supply. In addition, the production of alternative fuels from renewable/biologic...
